….. Those are just some of the many migraine medications and supplements that I can remember taking, I’m sure I’m forgetting a handful. It’s amazing that I still have any memory left, actually. After years and years and years of working with migraine specialists and being a pharmaceutical pawn, I started wondering why I found myself still sick, and now burdened with being overweight, depressed, suicidal, malnourished, exhausted… and still stuck in the chronic migraine cycle. To add to that, I was losing my grip on my job as a radio producer with NPR as a result of the migraines and myriad of side effects that came with all the medications. Memory loss, cognitive dysfunction, word loss, irritability, insomnia, severe mood imbalances, constipation, fatigue, inability to sweat, loss of appetite, etc. After the drugs continued to fail me, I tried Botox injections, which also did not help. I had had enough at this point! Why were doctors throwing medications at me and unable to address why I was having migraines in the first place!???

As Dr. Joel R. Saper, Chair of The Migraine Research Foundation Medical Advisory Board explains, “There is no condition of such magnitude – yet so shrouded in myth, misinformation, and mistreatment – as migraine.”

This slow and difficult realization that medications were not the answer to my health problems was the beginning of my journey into holistic healing. I started to look at every aspect of my life – from mind to body – to assess what was wrong. Not only was my body sick, but my mind was too. My thoughts and emotions were toxic, as were my organs, blood, and brain. I began working with a variety of healers – naturopaths, acupuncturists, chiropractors, psychologists, etc – to educate myself about how to heal. This involved many different tests to determine the imbalances in my body – and included more supplements than I was comfortable with. At one point, I was taking over 15 supplements per meal (3x a day). This experience solidified my understanding of the value of moderation with everything in life – food, lifestyle choices, pharmaceuticals, supplements, etc. It has been a slow process – one of trial and error – that has brought me to a place where I no longer suffer from migraines and I no longer need medications to function. This has involved hormonal balancing, detoxing, healing my gut and digestion, spiritual healing, and more. The causes of migraines are complex and unique to each individual, therefore the process to heal is complex as well.

If you find yourself in the all-too-common scenario of being on medications and still having migraines, please know that there is hope to potentially address the underlying health conditions causing your migraines. I’m here to share this hope with you. Would you like help?
